The year was 2010. I received an email saying a senior from school had published a new post on her blog. I don’t remember the details of the post, but the embedded music player on the side of the page was playing The Offspring’s ‘You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid’.

This will sound like a Millennial’s rose-tinted nostalgia speaking — but I miss that experience. It was like getting a three-dimensional view of a person’s interests and experiences without an algorithm playing middleman.

It’s been six years since my wife and I brought a little Indie puppy named Shadow into our lives. She is super well-adjusted and gives us very little trouble.

Deciding that we (and Shadow) could use more trouble in our lives, we rescued a three-month old Indie from the streets. His name is Zorro, and he’s already zooming around with stuff he shouldn’t bite and nicking Shadow’s food when she isn’t looking.

Hardware

Dell XPS 13 - I have a love-hate relationship with this machine. It’s tiny and super portable, but has a tendency to heat up like the Sun and sound like a miniature jet engine.
Samsung Galaxy S24 - Wanted a compact phone. Liked the size at first. Realised it’s so slippery it needs a strong case to protect it. Doesn’t feel compact anymore.

Some concepts and frameworks to help navigate the randomness of life:

Normal distributions are your friend - The outcomes of most actions will fall in an expected range, usually backed by historical or anecdotal data. Plan for that range, and make peace with the low probability outlier outcomes.

Spend some time on Game Theory - Feels like average B-School hokum at first, but actually explains a lot about psychology, motivation, and distinguishing between positive and zero sum games. This video from Veritasium shows one of the most interesting experiments on navigating the Prisoner’s Dilemma.

My father had his second angioplasty recently.

He was pretty nonchalant about it. The last one was in 2005. Getting one every 20 years can’t be that bad.

His main concern was making sure the insurance documentation was airtight.

“Make sure the doctor signs the back of the reports too.”

She did — and assured me that the procedure went well — before rushing off for her next one for the day.

This is the third time I’ve made a website.

The first one was technically a blog — back in 2009 when everyone had one. The personal journal of a newly-minted adult who did not have to bother with curating an online existence.

I still believe the personal blog is the peak of self expression on the Internet. But that’s a separate train of thought you can read here.

The second site was an attempt at professionalism. It was built on WordPress — like most personal sites in the mid-2010s. Working on it was an eye-opening experience that laid bare the potential of the WordPress platform, and its many frailties.
